Biographie :

Née à Lafayette (Indiana) le 17 juin 1889, Louise Fazenda était la fille d’un boulanger pâtissier basque. Après avoir étudié dans une high school a Los Angeles, elle se prépare à faire ses études à l’université lorsque le commerce paternel fait faillite. Une voisine qui travaille à l’Universal lui propose de l’y accompagner pour chercher du travail. Elle est engagée. Son premier rôle (dans A House Divided de Wilfrid Lucas, 1913) sera celui d’une domestique noire dans un film dramatique. Bien vite, ses talents comiques sont reconnus et elle tourne dans les Joker Comedies (productions Universal) avec Max Asher, vedette comique de la maison, puis avec Bobby Vernon. En 1915, remarquée par Ford Sterling qui la présente à Sennett, elle entre à la Keystone pour travailler sous la direction de Mack Sennett et, l’année suivante, se marie à un des metteurs en scène de la maison, Noel Mason Smith, avec qui elle restera jusqu’en 1926 (un an plus tard, elle épousera le producteur Hal Wallis). Polly Moran étant malade, Louise la remplace et devient vite une vedette. Dès 1922, elle apparaît en outre dans des comédies de long métrage pour la First National ou la Warner. En 1927-1928, elle forme un tandem comique avec Clyde Cook pour la Warner. Dans les années 1930-1931, elle revient aux "shorts" en tournant, pour la Standard Cinema Corporation, les Louise Fazenda Series. Sa dernière apparition sur les écrans date de 1939 avec The Old Maid (La vieille fille) d’Edmund Goulding aux côtés de Bette Davis. Elle consacre la fin de sa vie aux enfants handicapés et meurt le 17 avril 1962 d’une hémorragie cérébrale à Beverly Hills (Californie).

Louise Fazenda, « la femme la plus prodigieuse révélée à l’écran », comme l’écrivait Biaise Cendrars3, fut baptisée en France à ses débuts Maggie (comme aux États-Unis) et devint ensuite Philomène. En Italie, c’était Bartolomea ou Filomena.
