Vernon Dent est un acteur américain né le 16 février 1895 à San José, Californie (États-Unis), mort le 5 novembre 1963 à Van Nuys (États-Unis). Il a joué dans plus de 400 films.

Au début des années 1920, Vernon Dent faisait partie du studio Mack Sennett, travaillant avec les comédiens Billy Bevan, Andy Clyde et surtout Harry Langdon. Mais Sennett a annulé tous ses contrats à l'avènement du cinéma sonore, et Dent a été engagé chez Educational Pictures en 1929. Lorsque l'Educational a embauché Harry Langdon pour une série de courts-métrages en 1932, Vernon Dent a repris sa place en tant que co-star de Langdon. En 1935 Dent rejoint le département courts-métrages de Columbia Pictures et y a fait ses plus grands succès. Il a ensuite travaillé avec pratiquement toutes les stars, y compris Andy Clyde, Charley Chase et Eddie Quillan (tous les anciens de Mack Sennett), ainsi que Buster Keaton, El Brendel, Barbara Jo Allen (Vera Vague), Hugh Herbert, Gus Schilling et Richard Lane, Harry von Zell et Bert Wheeler. Dent est apparu très occasionnellement dans des longs métrages, notamment Million Dollar Legs, Chip Off the Old Block, Kill the Umpire, The Harvey Girls et Rockin 'in the Rockies, mais était beaucoup plus visible dans les comédies courtes.

Dent a joué dans de nombreux films des Three Stooges (Trois Stooges); en fait, il a fait plus d'apparitions dans leurs films que n'importe quel autre acteur de second role. Il est devenu un ami proche de Shemp Howard.

Dent a souffert de diabète dans la vie et a fini par devenir aveugle, se retirant de la scène. Sa dernière "apparition" était Guns a Poppin (1957). Le diabète de Dent s'est aggravé après sa retraite, limitant ses activités. Il est mort d'une crise cardiaque le 5 novembre 1963. Il est enterré au Forest Lawn Memorial Park, dans le terrain Hillside, tombe L-3796.
